Paterson, a novel
This is the version of a novel I wrote in 1989, but was ripped off for a recent TV series.
There is an earlier, "smaller" version I wrote in 1987, part of what I call the "Kenny" series. I expanded it to become a large novel. Segments of this were published on line in what were called "magpies," in 1989-1990, and later in full during the 1990s on various webpages. Since then, I've written five alternative versions, including one non-fiction version about the main female character.
The later versions were an attempt to unravel some of the flash back issues in the big version, and then later to explore different points of view.
I'm posting this now because the person who inspired the character Jack just passed away. The story is based in 1987 and features a number of others inspired by real people.
Alternate versions
In the mid-1990s, I decided to rewrite the novel into a more moderate story. I did this partly because of some of the inconsistencies in the flash backs, and partly to focus more closely on the Patty character. I rewrote the story as a simple frame story, opening with the last scene of the book, and then one large flash back to how the characters got there (unfortunately, the first and last chapters do not line up and need to be rewritten. The story has three parts: meeting of Puck, then Maxwell's meeting of the poet, and finally the dancer sequence. I renamed the book "The King of Paterson." this included an attempt to use multiple points of views.
In the mid-2000s, I rewrote the novel under the title "Dancer in the Sand," limiting the point of view to first person with Maxwell as the principle story teller. Below are links to that version.
